The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Surgeon
General and the American Academy of Pediatrics have all challenged
the public at large to promote activity and fitness in all ages
- especially youth. Smartmoovz® has met these challenges full force
by continuing to create and implement comprehensive health and fitness
programs in a variety of forms including its consumer video series,
television programming, special events, instructor and participant
fitness training and program set-up, lectures and general instruction,
and other programs and services available to the public.
Two of the challenges raised by the Centers
for Disease Control (CDC) in order to promote behavior changes
in children regarding physical activity are: "Recommending
that they [the children] develop a plan for regular moderate activity
with an emphasis on small, specific and realistic goals"
and "Showing them [the children] how much fun physical activity
can be..." (source: www.cdc.gov)
Smartmoovz®,
inc., was created in order to meet challenges like
these head-on by providing parents, educators, medical professionals
and others with cost-effective tools to easily implement into daily
life. The Smartmoovz® programs are easily performed by just about
any fitness level, and promote a fun set of basic activities that
can be done in any setting. Since the programs are scalable, participants
can start off slowly with small goals and then build up to the full
program if necessary. However, the most important goal of the Smartmoovz®
company is to promote fun as well as fitness!
Additionally, there were three points brought
up by the Surgeon General's report from last year:
"Create opportunities for physical
activities that are enjoyable, that promote adolescents' and young
adults'confidence in their ability to be physically active and
that involves friends, peers and parents.”
"Provide appropriate physical active
role models for youths."
"Encourage health care providers
to talk routinely to adolescents and young adults about the importance
of physical activity into their lives." (source:

In an effort to answer this call on the community
by the Surgeon General, Smartmoovz®
designed programs that not only appeal to different ages, but also
different fitness levels. These are fun activities created to get
individuals up and mooving. And, while the main goals are fun and
fitness, education is a big part of the programs as well. Fitness
facts as well as correct techniques are presented in easy-to-understand
formats that further encourage participation by individuals and
groups throughout the programs.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has asked
the public to produce "educational" programming for
children. This, according to its website, does not include cartoons.
(source: www.aap.org)
There currently are very few videos/DVDs and television
programs that can be classified here as educational, let alone that
promote physical fitness. Smartmoovz® has made a point to provide
not only sound activity programs based on a medical and fitness
foundation, but an educational forum that enables individuals of
just about any fitness level to participate and have fun. The fitness
facts throughout the Smartmoovz® video series encourage knowledge
in health, animals, sports and many other areas, while the fitness
portions examine proper techniques in an entertaining fashion.
On a more extreme note, new government data
is reporting that 15 percent of children and adolescents in the
United States (approximately 9 million individuals) are either overweight
or at risk to become overweight. Obesity issues such as these further
put our nation's youth at risk for other even more serious health
conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
According to the Journal of the American
Medical Association (JAMA) - November 09, 2002:
Approximately 15 percent of 12- to 19-year-olds
are overweight now, up from 5 percent in the late '70s.
15 percent of 6- to 11-year-olds are overweight
now, up from 7 percent in the late '70s.
10 percent of 2- to 5-year-olds are over weight
now, up from 5 percent in the late '70s
Current reports also show that children should
now have an hour of physical activity every day, increased from
the previous recommendation of 30 minutes per day. It is a known
fact that children need to decrease inactive television and computer
time and become more active through programs similar to the Smartmoovz®
video series, walking, dancing or bicycling. Even the slightest
amount of activity can contribute to health and well being, also
promoting self-esteem and confidence.
